General

DistrictPulse is a licensed feature available for Qmlativ. This solution is built using Amazon QuickSight, a secure, cloud-scale business intelligence (BI) service delivering easy-to-understand data insights. This technology gives decision makers the opportunity to combine data in order to explore and interpret trends in an interactive environment.

DistrictPulse takes nightly extractions of data from datasets based on the modules you use in Qmlativ. The data is then pushed to a secure cloud where you can then select fields from the datasets to build and customize your own visuals or dashboards, (or pre-built dashboards) to help with data-driven decision making.

  • Direct Integration with SIS: DistrictPulse tightly integrates with Qmlativ, eliminating the need for data to be shared with a separate vendor. This ensures accurate data representation and simplifie the implementation process.
  • Enhanced Security: By leveraging the security within Qmlativ, DistrictPulse ensures that users can only access data they are authorized to see, providing peace of mind and compliance with data privacy regulations.
  • User-Friendly Interface: DistrictPulse features an intuitive interface that simplifies data visualization and analysis. Users can easily navigate dashboards and explore data without needing advanced technical skills.
  • Pre-Built Dashboards: DistrictPulse offers an extensive collection of pre-built dashboards available for immediate use, making it easier for users to start analyzing data from day one.

Anybody who is set up as a DistrictPulse User can access the tool from a Module within Qmlativ after purchasing this product.
  • Author Users – Have the ability to create, modify, and share dashboards to Readers and Groups
  • Reader Users – Have the ability to view and interact with what has been shared with them or the groups that they are in.

Please reach out to your account executive for more information.

  1. Talk with your Skyward Sales Representative to get started.
  2. We work with you to add the module to your environment while setting up the infrastructure for your data.
  3. We help set up the configuration to establish the connection needed by running a process to extract your data for the first time.
  4. You then set up users and groups right within the module in Qmlativ, then launch District Pulse.

Using District Pulse

Anybody that you define as a user. There are two types of users for the tool:
  • Author – Can build, modify, and share visuals as well as view dashboards.
  • Reader – Can view and interact dashboards that are shared to them or groups they are a part of.

Your data is encrypted as well as following other very strict standards that are in place for the AWS infrastructure. The datasets in the tool use row security, meaning the data that a DistrictPulse user can see in the tool is limited to what they can see in Qmlativ.

DistrictPulse allows users inquire about a subject (e.g.: attendance, discipline, grades,) and be able to quickly and easily build a visual that can help them find an answer or see trends. Data visualization can be run in just a few minutes, or it’s possible that a whole dashboard of information can be built around a subject in the span of a training call. It gives users freedom to tailor visuals to their needs, and target what is most important to them.

  1. Start with a question you want answered.
  2. Create a new dashboard and select a dataset that you need and immediately start choosing relevant fields. DistrictPulse will automatically start building a visual based on the fields you pick.
  3. Add more information to drill down to or aggregate, add filters to help target the information further, as well as select different visual types to help see the data in a way that is useful to you.
  4. Add more datasets and more visuals to help answer additional questions.
  5. Use pre-built dashboards to help answer questions, or give yourself a starting point for building a customized dashboard for your site.

Functionality

User management, data extractions, configuration, and launching is handled through the DistrictPulse Module in Qmlativ. You can add users—both Author and Reader, and Groups—that will sync with DistrictPulse, making it easier to share dashboards with your users.

sheet is one “page” of a dashboard. Instead of having to share multiple dashboards with users, you can instead use additional sheets to add more information to a dashboard without adding too many visuals on one page, or needing to make another dashboard entirely.

Analyses are what Author users can create, modify, and customize that eventually get published into dashboards.

visual is what is used to see data in a clear way, like bar graphs, pie charts, pivot tables, scatter plots, word clouds, and more.

You have options for the individual visual, the whole sheet, or across all sheets in that dashboard. If you have multiple datasets available, you can also define it to filter across the datasets and will apply the filter to any dataset that shares the defined field.

Absolutely, you can define that option when you create a filter.

Yes, filters can be created for individual visuals, as well as multiple visuals, sheets, or multiple sheets.

You can export data to a .csv, or you can export the whole dashboard as a .pdf. You cannot export a single visual as an image at this time. You can schedule snapshots of dashboards, and can define those schedules using the scheduling feature on a dashboard.

Yes, you have the ability to look at all the recent snapshots that you have scheduled.

Visuals are able to be tailored individually, all the way down to the font used for the labels you would like to create. Titles, axis labels, orientation, formatting, and more can all be edited and customized based on the type of visual you have selected.

Datasets cannot be combined in a single visual at this time. However, you can have multiple datasets on the same dashboard.

Authors are the sole owner of their analyses unless they decide to share it. If an Author makes another or an Authors group a co-owner of an analysis, they will all have the ability to edit and publish that analysis into a dashboard.

When Authors go to share an analysis, they can see who they shared the analysis with and with which permissions. The same is true for Dashboards.

Yes, you are able to view who is accessing the tool using the Module Usage History Feature in Qmlativ, as well as create a visual using the Module Usage history dataset that we have available.

Data

Currently we have datasets that are built around Modules in Qmlativ. They cover:
  1. Student
  2. Enrollment
  3. Attendance
  4. Grades
  5. Discipline
  6. Log-in History
  7. Module Usage History
We have additional datasets being developed as well:
  1. Gradebook
  2. Activities
  3. MTSS
  4. Health
  5. Scheduling
  6. More to come!

Yes, as well as in storage.

They represent if the field is an integer, a string, a date, or a calculated field. This can be helpful in choosing the right field if you want to aggregate your data in a certain way on a visual.

Spice is the caching engine for QuickSight. This label means the dataset is using this engine.

Yes, and you can even apply it across datasets, assuming the field you selected to filter on is available in both.

You have the ability to do both! You can choose whatever option works best for you.

It is a nightly extract, but you also have the ability to run the extract manually whenever needed.

It depends on the size of the district, and how much data is extracted. More data means longer extraction times.

You have the ability to run extracts manually, and can shut off the nightly extracts. Administrators can change the workflow of their nightly processes, but you cannot handle this through the DistrictPulse module.

  1. The Skyward canned dashboards will get updated every night while maintaining the permissions you have assigned.
  2. If you accidentally delete one, it will be pushed to your site again automatically and assigned to the Authors group.
  3. Other dashboards are owned solely by the Author that created them unless otherwise shared, and will not be able to be viewed until permissions are given to groups or other users.
  4. Authors have the ability to update the analysis used to create the dashboard, but those changes will not happen until they choose to re-publish, in which they can either create a new dashboard, or update an existing one.
  5. Users who can view the dashboard will only be able to see data that they can normally see within Qmlativ, even if the dashboard is set up to show additional information for a broader audience.

Troubleshooting

Make sure that you are set up as a user, and are a part of a group. Both need to be true before you can launch.

Contact your district’s Skyward representative for troubleshooting support.

We had Alpha and Beta Testers for this tool that have been using and testing for over a year.

Visit our DistrictPulse site at www.skyward.com/districtpulse. For further questions or concerns, contact your district’s Skyward representative.
