Malware of the Month

This month’s Malware of the Month is called Clipboard Poisoning. Clipboard Poisoning is a term many people aren’t familiar with, but it has existed for quite a few years in computing. Poisoning occurs when you copy something from a website, but the website replaces what you copied onto your clipboard with something different. The replacement can be as innocent as swapping the copied material with a sentence stating where the information came from, or as malicious as replacing your clipboard with code that will crash your computer. Recently, these attacks have become more widespread, especially for Mac users.

If you are concerned that a website may be infected by Clipboard Poisoning, open up TextEdit or Notepad and paste your copied material into it. Does the same thing you meant to copy appear? If not, the site you used to obtain that code may be a victim of a cyberattack. It would be wise to avoid going to that site for a while, until they have addressed the issue.
