Our Commitment

We strive to make our software products inclusive and usable by everyone, including individuals with disabilities. Our development practices are guided by the principles of universal design and align with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards.

Level AA conformance, W3C WAI Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1

What We Do

Design interfaces that are navigable by keyboard and screen readers.

  • Use clear, readable fonts and high-contrast color schemes.
  • Ensure compatibility with assistive technologies.
  • Conduct regular accessibility audits and testing using various assistive technology tools.
  • Integrate procedures into our Software Development Life Cycle to ensure that new features are accessible from the start.

Roadmap for Accessibility Enhancements

As part of our ongoing commitment to accessibility, we are actively working to enhance the usability and inclusivity of our Student Access and Family Access modules. These updates will include:

  • Improved screen reader support and keyboard navigation.
  • Enhanced visual design for better readability and contrast.
  • Accessibility testing with users and assistive technology tools.

We anticipate rolling out these improvements in phases over the coming months and will provide updates as milestones are reached.

Continuous Improvement

Accessibility is an ongoing effort. We welcome feedback from users and accessibility experts to help us improve. Our team regularly updates our products to enhance accessibility and stay current with best practices and legal requirements, including Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Skyward Accessibility FAQ

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2.1 is an international standard developed by the W3C to make web content accessible to people with disabilities. Level AA is the most widely adopted compliance level and includes requirements for:

  • Text alternatives for non-text content (images, charts)
  • Captions and audio descriptions for multimedia
  • Keyboard navigation for all functionality
  • Adequate color contrast and scalable text
  • Clear error identification and instructions.

Compliance ensures that Skyward’s platforms are inclusive and meet legal requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title II and similar regulations. It also improves usability for all users, not just those with disabilities.

Skyward is actively auditing its products against WCAG 2.1 Level AA success criteria and prioritizing remediation of identified issues. This includes:

  • Manual and automated accessibility testing
  • Adding alt text for images
  • Improving keyboard navigation and focus indicators
  • Enhancing color contrast and text scalability.

Meeting all critical WCAG 2.1 AA requirements is an ongoing process. According to our most recent VPAT, we support or partially support all identified success criteria in our Family and Student Access modules. However, we continue to make improvements to our software to move us closer to fully supporting our Family and Student Access modules.

We use a combination of:

  • Audit-based tracking (not just automated scans)
  • Validation by accessibility specialists
  • Real-time dashboards to monitor progress against WCAG success criteria.

Our primary focus is to ensure that our Qmlativ and SMS 2.0 Student and Family Access modules meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards by April 2026. Our software development life cycle includes steps to ensure that future features and updates meet the WCAG 2.1 AA standard.

Exceptions may apply for legacy content or third-party integrations, but we will provide guidance and alternative solutions where possible.

  • Improved navigation for keyboard-only users
  • Better screen reader compatibility
  • Clearer visual design with higher contrast
  • Accessible multimedia with captions and transcripts.

We will publish updates on our Accessibility Commitment page and provide periodic reports to customers. For detailed technical guidance, refer to the official WCAG 2.1 guidelines.
